Franz Gojer Lagrein

2008

This year I tasted a number of wines from Franz and Florian Gojer, but was most struck by the higher-end reds. Glogglhof is a small, family-run property located in the St. Magdalena district.

"The 2008 Lagrein is a pretty, mid-weight wine with attractive varietal definition in its dark fruit, herbs and spices, and a long, clean finish. This vinous, accessible Lagrein is an excellent chice for near-term drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2013."

"Artisanal producer Franz Gojer is a reliable source for deep, inky, velvety reds from the Lagrein grape. This succulent effort is a push-pull of sweet-savory sensations, with hints of cocoa, black fruit and roasted meat."

SUBLIME | LAGREIN
"...what happened next had the feel of an epilogue. But what an epilogue!

One of the last tables I visited was the Franz Gojer Glögglhof table; as I approached it, I could see the gagglehof of geeks grouped around it, buzzing about the Lagrein.

What I heard was this: "no one makes better Lagrein than Glögglhof." So. I had reached the throbbing core of Lagrein. Usually, when I get to a core like that, my anti-cliché instincts push me away from the wine. Core wine had damned better be great wine. And this? This 2006 Glögglhof Lagrein? From the outstanding 2006 Alto Adige vintage, which also had everyone buzzing?

Suffice it to say: I was throbbing within seconds...the more I drew this sublime ether into my nostrils, the...more it started smelling like minerals, soil, earth, all the properties I worship in good wine. On the palate, the wine is suave, silky, concentrated, utterly filled-in with beautiful extract. There is lots of tannin beneath all that, but the lush fruit covers it well--so it's a gorgeous drink right now, and will likely be more gorgeous still in 15 years.

Sometime before then, I decided on the spot, I will pack a picnic lunch....probably some Tyrolean speck, a lightly smoked cured ham.....and a bottle of 2006 Glögglhof.....and I shall trek up der Rosengarten, where I will feast on the slopes of my mountain. With an appropriately majestic slosh."

Deep black almandine ruby with almandine rim. The bouquet is delicate, with airy berry fruit supported by savory sea salt, hints of sandalwood, and hardwood smoke. Inviting. On the palate it's it's medium bodied, and bright, with savory red berry fruit supported by deft acidity and clean slightly brambly tannins -- the wine is aged in large wood -- that flow into a clean slightly bitter savory finish. Deft and elegant, it will go quite well with grilled meats and foods that have smoky accents, and could also be pressed into service with succulent grilled fish.

Saturated ruby tending to garnet. Intriguing perfume of violet, peat and soil. The flavors of bitter chocolate and rhubarb jam are deep and uncommonly vibrant. Licorice and espresso emerge on the back as the long finish becomes increasingly smoky. Firm but suave tannins coat the palate. Classic lagrein.

Nearly opaque purple-ruby. Pure berries on the nose, followed by gorgeous blackberry on the palate. Very pure and focused on the palate, exhibiting admirable freshness and clarity, and a velvety texture. The dark berry flavors mingle with milk chocolate, cinnamon and a vein of peat on the long finish. A harmonious and pleasurable wine, with sweet tannins.
